Azkaban is the wizard prison. It is situated on a island, a little way out to sea. Witches and wizard who have committed crimes (such as stealing, murder etc.) are sent there. Azkaban is an extremely high security fortress but it isn't the fortress which keeps the prisonors from escaping, it's the Azkaban guards. The Azkaban guards are Dementors, they are sinister creatures who feed on happiness and emotions and drain every last drop of happiness and hope out of anyone they're near to. Theya re dressed in black cloaks and glide along the ground. They have rotted, decaying hands and under their hoods, they have no face, only a huge gaping black mouth. With which they administer the Dementor's Kiss - this means that they suck the very soul out of a person, it's worse than being dead. Prisonors at Azkaban go completely mad from the Dementor's torment. They forget who they are, where they are and all their happy memonries, they dwell only on their worst, most terrible memories. Sirius Black is one of the only people ever to escape from Azkaban. |
