Fun
Facts
The first thing director Alfonso Cuarón did when
he met the Trio was to set them an essay on their characters
that would help them understand their characters better
and that they could refer back to during scenes. According
to Dan Radcliffe, the essay showed them how 'scarily like'
their characters they were: Dan wrote about a page, doing
his 'homework' but satisfactorily, as Harry would have done;
Emma wrote about 16 pages on Hermione's character, just
like how Hermione always overdoes things; and Rupert forgot
about the essay and never handed it in, which for Alfonso
was good enough as it was very 'Ronnish'.
Dan says he got his co-stars into old-school punk rock bands
on set - he influenced Rupert, David Thewlis and even acting
legend Gary Oldman (Sirius)
Dan got some base guitar tips from Gary Oldman (Sirius)
on set who he says is an accomplished player
Dan says he listened to a lot of guitar music in order to
get into Harry's 'murderous' frame of mind in this film
Rupert found his most challenging scene was where he was
dragged into the Shrieking Shack by Sirius and ended up
hitting the camera very hard on his way in
Dan and Emma most enjoyed the Shrieking Shack scene because
of the great sense of energy, having four great actors working
with them in one room (Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, David
Thewlis and Timothy Spall)
David
Thewlis (Lupin) said when they met up to do the Shriekign
Shack scene, Timothy Spall (Pettigrew) said to him, Rickman
and Oldman: 'You know, I've always wanted to work with you
three - but I expected it to be a Shakesperean production
or something like that, not all made up as a rat.'
The Shrieking Shack scene took a month to film
Dan and Rupert talk about their experiences with the animals
on set:
Dan: A bat landed on my head. It was
actually very funny. I actually really love the animals,
especially the lizards. The lizards are so cool. And the
mice are fighting — the mice are fantastic. We’re
taking bets on them. It’s between who’s gong
to win or who’s going to escape first.
Rupert: Spiders I hate, but when we
were in there with the bat I didn’t know I was scared
of bats as well. Horrible!
Alfonso says JK gave him a lot of freedom for the film:
She
said I should stay faithful to the spirit of the book not
literal. That was entrusting me a lot of freedom. But freedom
and responsibility is the same thing - I was like 'oh gosh
- am I being faithful to the spirit?'
The amazing thing with JK as a collaborator is she doesn't
stop you doing anything. The way she approaches it has nothing
to do with 'I like' or 'I dislike' it's 'this makes sense'
or 'it doesn't make sense in this universe.'
This picture is a freeze-frame of the Boggart scene - it's
in the DADA class in film, when Ron fights the boggart and
it's shifting... is that Alfonso Cuarón?
